Even though there is only one spinoff in the Diablo series, there may be more styles that would be great for another one.
Since it began in 1997, Diablo has been a series for 26 years. In that time, Blizzard has only put out four major games and one side game. Even so, the first three games did have paid add-ons, and Blizzard did back those games overall with free updates.
The best thing Blizzard does is keep games going, which is something that should be praised. Diablo Immortal, the previously stated spinoff, is a phone version of the same top-down looter RPG. Now that Diablo 4 is out, are there no other styles that would work well for the Diablo series? Yes is the easy answer, so here are some ideas for where the show could go next.
An RTS Like WarCraft
The RTS game helped Blizzard become well-known. Both the WarCraft series and the StarCraft series were made by the same people. It’s surprising that they never tried to make Diablo into an RTS, though that may have happened behind the scenes.
It seems like a simple plan. Players could play as either a Lord of Heaven or a Lord of Hell. They could set up camps in Sanctuary, which is where most battles between Heaven and Hell happen. It’s hard to say where in the timeframe it could happen, but maybe it should be a prequel to the whole series.
A Strategy RPG Like Final Fantasy Tactics
If Blizzard is done making RTS games, they could make a strategy RPG instead. Final Fantasy Tactics shows how to make a good strategy RPG better than any other game. The story is dark, there is a class system based on Jobs, and the way you fight is the best of any game I’ve ever played.
It could also be a prequel, like how the RTS game was set up. It should be about a group of human fighters fighting both Heaven and Hell. Like in Final Fantasy Tactics, these fighters could change into classic classes like Rogues and Sorcerers. They could also take on more than one class.
A Third-Person Action RPG Like Dynasty Warriors
Fans of this show have said that the camera is sometimes too far away. Diablo 4 has the best graphics of the series, but the camera is so far away that it’s hard to enjoy the art. We’d like a fix that lets us add zoomed-in views, but that’s not the point.
Also, it would be cool if Blizzard talked to Koei Tecmo about making a third-person action game like Dynasty Warriors so that you could really control the camera. At this point, Koei Tecmo has made a lot of spinoffs of the Dynasty Warriors series with other companies.I think of Hyrule Warriors and Gundam Warriors. Diablo is all about hacking and slashing huge groups of monsters, so it would make sense for there to be a game called Diablo Warriors.
A First-Person Shooter Like DOOM
DOOM is all about fighting monsters in Hell. In Diablo, too, you have to fight monsters in Hell. Why hasn’t Blizzard made a first-person shooter or worked with DOOM yet? It seems like a match made in heaven, but there are some limits that make sense.
Guns don’t exist in the world of Diablo, which could be a problem, but the spinoff doesn’t need them anyway. This spinoff could be about Demon Hunters, which would be a good pick. They could fight off monsters just as well with crossbows or magic.
A Stealth Game Like Deus Ex
There are a lot of spy games, but not many of them work like RPGs. The main exception I can think of is Deus Ex. Imagine if the Assassin or the Rogue in Diablo could go on spy missions.
Characters could level up their skills in a lot of different ways, which helped them solve problems in a lot of different ways. There would also have to be different ways to talk. The game might be about three different groups: Humanity, Heaven, and Hell.
A Roguelike Like Hades
Spacebar Clicker and Hades both have something to do with Hell, but they do so in different ways.Diablo has a more Christian view of faith, while Hades is more about the Greek gods. Zagreus is the son of Hades, and he wants to leave the Underworld as soon as possible.
Zagreus and Lilith from Diablo 4 have a lot in common because they both hate their dads. Hades has a roguelike style of play, which could work well for Diablo. It would be interesting to see Lilith try to get away from her father at a different time in history.
A Simulation Game Like Moonlighter
Moonlighter is also a roguelike, so it might seem like we’re cheating by putting two games in this category in this list. But Moonlighter is more than just a roguelike. It is also a strategy game. Players take control of a shopkeeper who goes into caves at night to buy things to sell to adventurers the next day.
Imagine playing a game like Diablo where the same idea is used. Since this series is all about getting things, it would be a good fit. This spinoff could also be more of a straight-up shopkeeper simulation game, but the roguelike/simulation mix just works so well.
